Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a comprehensive, evidence-based, cognitive behavioral treatment. Balancing acceptance of self and the possibility of change, this approach provides clients with appropriate ways to manage distressful emotions and unhealthy behaviors that can often negatively impact one's self worth, relationships, work, and overall emotional well-being.

DBT has been proven to be effective with clinical issues including:

  • Depression
  • Substance dependence
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Eating disorders
  • Suicide
  • Borderline Personality Disorder

The goal of DBT is to equip clients to develop a healthier mindset through a variety of skills in four modules of training:

  • Mindfulness
  • Distress Tolerance
  • Emotional Regulation
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness

DBT focuses on these skills because it presumes that problematic behavior arises as a way to cope with problems or to meet particular needs. DBT believes that people of all ages are doing the best they can, and so in order to change behavior, they have to learn new techniques to deal with new and old problems. While DBT can be utilized in an individual context, there are great advantages to approaching it from a group perspective. These groups are experiential in nature, allowing clients to learn and apply the above skill sets while in relationship with others.

At LifeSong, we offer groups multiple times throughout the year. Our groups offer a safe and supportive environment for those struggling with distressing emotions and the sense of powerlessness that comes from those experiences. DBT can provide a sense of empowerment as the skills are learned to live successfully for teens and adults.
